Watermist is a versatile and highly efficient fire-fighting medium. What differentiates Watermist from traditional water based systems is its reduced droplet size. When a droplet of water vaporises, it expands by some 1,600 times. Because heat absorption is a function of surface area and not volume, smaller droplets mean more surface area and therefore faster heat absorption.

The Tyco MicroDrop® High Pressure Water Mist system is recognised by the major power and export customers as the foremost fire protection solution to meet the specialist needs of their industry.
In fact, not only have we been a single sourced provider for over 15 years to the major Power and Export customers, we have also acted as consultants to some of these customers in developing new fire protection technology for them.
On average, we complete over 50 Water Protection projects each year. At Tyco we firmly believe that there is no imaginable fire and safety risk within the Power and Export Industry that we have not encountered and neutralised.
Based on over 120 years fire protection experience, the ProtectoMist system has been designed to retain all of the proven performance and reliability of traditional water based systems, while capturing the efficiency of small water droplet, water mist technology.
The critical advantage of ProtectoMist is that this is achieved at a nozzle pressure of less than 12 bar (174 psi). This low pressure allows ProtectoMist to use similar operating pressures and components as traditional sprinkler systems. In this way, we retain the simplicity, reliability, performance and maintainability of traditional water based systems whilst improving on efficiency.
The unique design of the nozzles even allows the use of sea water with no clogging problems. Specific savings come from the fact that a minimum of just 12 litres (3.2 gallons) per minute flows from each nozzle. This means reduced pipe diameters, ease of installation, less system weight and minimal water discharge. Low operating pressure also gives us the option of using either copper or carbon steel pipework, in addition to stainless steel, and water is completely safe for people, your equipment and the environment.
What differentiates ProtectoMist from traditional water based systems is its reduced droplet size. As heat absorption is a function of surface area and not volume, smaller droplets mean more surface area and therefore faster heat absorption. There is also a secondary effect: - that of oxygen dilution. When a droplet of water vaporises, it expands by some 1,600 times, driving oxygen away from the fire. However, smaller droplets do not necessarily mean better performance. Droplets must have the necessary momentum to get to the seat of the fire where they rapidly cool, and expand to deny the fire oxygen. Rather than resort to high pressure to create momentum, ProtectoMist uses a range of droplet sizes to maximise penetration of the fire plume, and hence extinguishing performance.
Large droplets have the momentum to penetrate the fire plume and drag the smallest droplets into the combustion zone. Smaller droplets surround the fire and are pulled into the base of the fire as it draws in oxygen. The smallest droplets cool the gases in the room. , strip smoke from the air, and block the transfer of radiant heat. This results in extinguishment, using considerably less water than a traditional water spray system.
ProtectoMist can be applied to both local application and total flooding Watermist systems.
MicroDrop® High Pressure Water Mist pumped systems operate at 100 – 124 bar and provide a continuous water flow to the nozzles. These systems are ideally suited to protecting large spaces or fire risks involving ordinary combustibles materials to oil fires.
The High Pressure Electric or Diesel Pump arrangements generate approximately 124 bar which can be configured to reduce to provide a 100 bar pressure at the open nozzle end. The 124 bar starting pressure is pressure flow calculated to the discharge nozzles within the system pipework to ensure the required 100 bar at the nozzle is present.
The choice of Electric and Diesel Pump arrangements are site specific to suit the projects location within the World. Where a continuous water supply cannot be guaranteed, a water storage tank can be provided to store the required water capacity for a system discharge including a reserve capacity if required.
Pump systems can also be arranged to operate on a distribution valve arrangement where water is automatically discharged to a specific zone only.
The systems are extremely versatile and can be arranged to incorporate a wide variety of features.
