In a small auditorium the fire detection and alarm system could simply comprise of a manual system. In larger premises, with greater occupancy, the system should incorporate automatic detectors used in critical areas and in escape routes. In the largest and more complex auditoriums, full detection coverage is beneficial.

The reliability of the fire detection system is paramount, as its primary function is to protect life. As the system is likely to incorporate sounders, precautions must be taken against creating panic when the auditorium is occupied by members of the public. In such cases, two operating modes should be included; one for when the auditorium is occupied or in use by the public and one for when it is not use and likely to be empty.
